Central Saanich signs with Tsartlip

The District of Central Saanich will sign a historical agreement with the Tsartlip First Nation.

The two modelled their agreement to a similar one signed between the District of North Saanich and the Tseycum First Nation in 2007.

The agreement outlines the fact that the two share common boundaries, a fundamental interest in the stewardship of their traditional lands and a desire to work together in a co-operative manner for the benefit of all residents.

The purpose of the agreement is to establish stable and effective government-to-government relations and a framework that will strengthen, enhance and honour their historical, political, economic, social and cultural relationship.

The two councils agree to meet regularly, at least twice a year, to promote open and constructive dialogue and to agree on common priorities. They also agree to establish a joint committee to identify processes to address their priorities and to deal with matters that arise between joint council meetings.

The District of Central Saanich signed a renewable protocol agreement with the Tsawout First Nation several years ago.
