A rocky start to the hockey season left the Peninsula Eagles C2 atoms winless and itching for a victory. On Dec. 10 the team travelled to Sooke for hard defeat at the hands of Sooke C1. The scoreboard showed 22-0 when it was over.

During the week, Peninsula C2 practised and prepared to host Sooke C2, a team that beat the locals 7-0 in the fall.

Right from the face off it was clear Peninsula and Sooke C2 were evenly matched. Both teams rushed up and down the ice, exhibiting great offence and defence skills.

At the end of the first period the score was 0-0, reflecting the evenly matched effort. However, a star performance in the Eagles net was in the making.

Will Tamburino played out of his skin. He stopped several fiery onslaughts by the Sooke side in the first period, assisted my his D men.

The second period was almost a carbon copy of the first. Tamburino stopped two certain Sooke goals with ease, with one caught gloveside to the oohs and ahhs of both sets of supporters. Eagles defenceman Joseph Hyde gave his all, too, to stop the Thunderbirds side from getting a shot on goal.

In the third, Cassidy Pelton made a trip to the penalty box for hooking, but her team killed the penalty with ease.

Peninsula earned a powerplay when  do-or-die defender Hyde was steamrolled by one of the Sooke players. The Eagles set about taking advantage of the man advantage and the puck found its way to Hyde who skated through the Sooke defence, passed, and was eventually assisted by Pelton in scoring the only goal of the game.

The Eagles parents were on their feet as the game drew to a close. In the last two minutes Sooke pulled their goalie, but couldn’t produce results. Peninsula twice missed the open net.

The final buzzer brought a rush on the Peninsula net. Tamburino had a smile like a cheshire cat on his face as the team swarmed around him. He earned the gold training jersey for next practice
