Sooke society stages sit-in to save a park from commercial zoning

Sooke council is set to discuss rezoning the park during its Oct. 15 meeting

A weekend 1960s-style sit-in set the stage for a council discussion Tuesday night.

The Friends of Sooke Parks Society hunkered down in the green space that has been a park since 1965 ahead of the proposal to rezone it from public recreation to general commercial on Tuesday (Oct. 15) evening.

“(We’re) trying to save the only zoned parcel of parkland in our town centre and have some fun while doing it,” the organization told the Sooke News Mirror.

“This is why neighbourhood parks matter. They are places where we meet neighbours and make new friends. What a fun couple of hours with a wonderful, talented, warm-hearted, and welcoming group of people.”

The item is set for discussion at council, with the agenda and ways to participate in the meeting available online at sooke.ca.
