There are no tickets left for the Dinner en Rouge in Sidney later this month.

Sidney’s Canada 150 events this year are proving quite popular — as the weekend’s Van Isle Comic Con at the Mary Winspear Centre proved, with hundreds of fans streaming through the doors.

Organizer Kenny Podmore says thanks to promotion of the event in the Peninsula News Review and other sources, the Dinner en Rouge on June 25 has sold out. That event features a meal on the lawn at Beacon Park, where everything — including the state of dress — is red and white.

But all is not lost for people looking to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in Sidney this year.

On June 23, condo owners at the Pier on the waterfront plan to hang around 60 Canada flags form their balconies — making for a patriotic display.

The next day, June 24, is the Canada 150/Sidney 50 Paint the Town Red and White street party. Starting at 10 a.m., this event is a combined celebration of both anniversaries (Sidney marks 50 years as a Town this year). Sidney’s 50th birthday party at the Army Navy and Air Force Veterans’s Club (ANAVETS) on Third Street. There will be a garage sale, face painting, barbecue, draws and games and music bingo.

The Street Dance, celebrating the local and national milestones, starts at 6 p.m. and runs until 9 p.m. It features the music of the bands Shaky Ground and Super Sauce and is sponsored by Slegg Lumber. There will be kids games by Panorama Recreation Centre and food trucks on site.

On June 26, the Shoal Centre hosts a ‘Celebrate our Roots’ event from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The fun keeps going late this month and next with Sidney Days from June 30 to July 2.
