Four free sessions in person and online aim to arm residents with information as Victoria embarks on its next phase of major road upgrades.
Changes are coming for sections of Cook Street between Haultain Street and Maplewood Road, and two sections of Blanshard Street – between Humboldt and Fort streets and Caledonia Avenue to Kings Road.
Upgrades vary by corridor but include road paving and other maintenance, new or improved crosswalks, dedicated space for biking and rolling, traffic signal upgrades and intersection safety improvements, according to the city.
Construction will be phased in this year and next to minimize impacts to traffic.
This work aligns with the Victoria’s 2023-2026 Strategic Plan priorities to expand the AAA bike and roll network and improve the experience for pedestrians, mobility device users and the public generally.
“The corridors identified are some of the highest collision corridors in the city, and the improvements will help move Victoria towards its goal of eliminating traffic-related deaths or serious injuries,” the city said in a news release. “Transportation improvements planned for these major arterial streets will complement other, more localized upgrades across the city.”
Sessions run in person Feb. 20 from 4 to 6 p.m. at The Atrium (800 Yates St.) and Feb. 25 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Quadra Village Community Centre (901 Kings Rd.). Online sessions are Feb. 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and March 4 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. using Microsoft Teams.
