PEARL Magazine, published by the Peninsula News Review and Black Press, earned a nomination for best special publication at the Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards, which celebrates journalistic excellence in B.C. and the Yukon.

More than 20 Black Press newspapers are up for awards, including Oak Bay News, Saanich News, and the Goldstream News Gazette.

PEARL is a lifestyle magazine focused squarely on the Peninsula with a focus on living and eating well. PEARL is a joyful exploration of artists, authors, musicians, politicians, entrepreneurs, yachters and farmers — all the people who create the fabric of this diverse community.

The April/May edition, which was nominated for the award, takes a look inside the home of local architect Silvia Bonet, the farms of Deep Cove, spring fashions, artist Sheena Lott, and much more.

The magazine can be found on the Saanich Peninsula, Saltspring Island and Pender Island and is also viewable online as an e-edition on the Peninsula News Review website.

The award recognized group publisher Penny Sakamoto, interim publisher Dale Naftel, editor Susan Lundy, and creative director Lily Chan.

Hosted by the B.C. & Yukon Community Newspaper Association, the Ma Murrays celebrate the work of community journalists across the province for advertising, photography, writing in print and overall newspaper excellence.

This year’s awards include a new category focusing on multimedia storytelling in the digital medium.

The winners will be announced on April 28, at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, B.C
