St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Sidney is planning to serve their 100,000th bowl of soup in the next several weeks during the neighbour’s lunch program.
The weekly lunch runs on Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the church hall at 9691 Fourth St.
A spokesperson for the church said in a statement it is unlikely that the recipient of the 100,000th bowl of soup will be identified for privacy reasons.
The program celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023, and a total of 2,274 turkey dinners and countless buns have been served.
Neighbour’s lunch paused for two years during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Volunteers prepared lunch in their homes and brought the food to church during the early years of the program. These days, all the food is prepared and served at the church by a group of 12 volunteers.
In 2023, 5,097 bowls of soup and 114 Christmas turkey dinners were served.
The program accepts donations, but no one is turned away.
Neighbour’s lunch also prepares soup for the friends of St. Andrew’s, the church’s other outreach program that takes food out on the streets to feed people twice a week.
