A Greater Victoria charity announced that they will donate $1 million to Canada’s first public, non-profit, long-term care village.

The Eldercare Foundation, a charity dedicated to raise and stewarding funds to enhance seniors quality of life, announced their donation to Providence Living at The Views, a new long-term living model based on the concept of a dementia village in Comox.

“Partnering with Providence Living on this transformational model of care is an exciting step in our evolution,” said Eldercare executive director Tom Arnold in a news release. “Over the decades we have relied on philanthropic support to improve quality of life for seniors in Greater Victoria. Thanks to the generosity and foresight of our donors, including an unprecedented bequest gift of $34M we received last year, Eldercare is ready to meet the challenges of our aging population across Vancouver Island.”

The Views, which is set to open in July, includes a five-year research study of the care village led by the Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes. The evaluation will provide insights to build more person-centred care villages across the province and beyond.

“When it comes to moving the needle towards positive change, in our 40 years of experience we’ve seen that research is vital,” noted Arnold in the release. “Good ideas come and go, but good ideas backed up by research create new paradigms of care. If the research shows improved quality of life for seniors and reduced or defrayed costs for the health care system, then there’s no way that this won’t get adopted elsewhere.”
