A Western Canada-based architectural and design firm has been hired to design Central Saanich’s new municipal facilities.

HCMA, a company with offices in Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary will draft designs for the aging district facilities at 1903 Mt Newton Road.

The same company also designed Victoria Fire Station No. 1, Saanich Fire Station No. 2, Temesewtx Aquatic and Community Centre in New Westminster and Whistler Public Library.

In a statement released on Monday (Feb. 3), Mayor Ryan Windsor said he is confident HCMA will contribute to developing a public area that will inspire and benefit the neighbourhood for many years to come and fulfill the district's present needs.

“We are pleased to have HCMA working on this pivotal project for our community. Their impressive track record and design style make them the perfect fit for our vision."

The company has received numerous accolades for excellence in design and community service, including the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia Award in Architecture, the Canadian Architect Award of Excellence and the RAIC Award for Innovation in Architecture.

"We think that the impact of a public building is often defined by how engaged the community is in its design, construction and operation," said Adam Fawkes, associate principal at HCMA.

HCMA has already begun the design, which will include a civic facility at 1903 Mount Newton and two plans for a building on Hovey Road, one with and one without recreation facilities.

The district said the designs and costs will be presented to the community for input this spring.
