Folk society cooks up inspiring concerts

Many of you are aware of two enjoyable musical experiences that have taken place regularly at St. John’s Church across from Deep Cove school. But in case you don’t know,  or are one of those people who say they always mean to go but need a reminder,  I will tell you about upcoming concerts.

The Jazz Vespers series is altering their theme on Sunday and celebrating the coming of spring with Celtic music by Cookeilidh. The concert takes place on March 20 at 7 p.m. and is free with donations appreciated. For more information contact eve.kerr@telus.net.

Also using St. John’s Church is the Deep Cove Folk Society. It is a series that has been running now for 30 years. Their popular concerts are held the second and fourth Friday of each month.  The next will be on April 8 with performers Jack Stevenson and May Brown, well known for entertaining at coffee houses throughout the Island with their music and humour.

The Deep Cove Folk organizers would like to draw attention to a special performance by one of Canada’s popular Atlantic coast singers and song writers Lennie Gallant. This concert will be held at the Mary Winspear Centre on March 30 at 8 p.m. Net proceeds of the concert will aid Deep Cove Folk in bringing new performers for you on the Friday nights at St. John’s Church.

The Saanich Peninsula Arts and Crafts Society has its annual spring show coming up at the end of April. To publicize the event the club has mounted a very vibrant show in the display cases at the Mary Winspear Centre showing the talents of its members.

At the February meeting a photo of old farm machinery was presented to club members who were challenged to give their interpretation of the picture. The resulting show titled Point of View gives a delightful perspective from many of our familiar artists such as Keith Levang, and Janet Remmer and printmaker Pauline Martland.  Included is a sculpted piece by Duncan Currie, leather work by Joan Byers, copper jewelry by Judith Hirczy and another of Gord Langston’s welded whimsies. The annual spring show from this long established club will be held April 30 and May 1 at the Mary Winspear Centre.

During March at the Tulista Arts Centre is a show presented by the Community Arts Council entitled, Sitting Pretty. Displayed are sumptuous quilts done both in the traditional style with geometrical and floral designs as well as contemporary with abstract shapes and pictorials. Adding interest to the display are a number of decorated chairs.

Following in April the photography club, Sidney Shutterbugs will have a show. Their theme this year will be cats.
