Senior boys, girls basketball playoff update

Claremont hosts senior girls 3A Island championships

The host Claremont Spartans moved on to the Senior Girls AAA Island Basketball Championship semifinals on Friday with a 77-23 win over the Vanier Towhees in the opening game, Thursday.

Spartan co-captain Sierra Reisig was named the player of the game, scoring 23 points before sitting out the fourth quarter.

Claremont faces Nananimo District in Friday night’s semifinal, 7:15 p.m. at Claremont. Nanaimo District defeated Belmont 67-27 to advance. Cowichan will face Oak Bay in the other semifinal, 5:30 on Friday, as Cowichan defetead Stelly’s 43-36 and Oak Bay dfeated Spectrum 80-30.

Last week Oak Bay won the AAA senior girls city finals 72-66 over Claremont.

In senior boys basketball action the Oak Bay Bays are the Lower Island 4A champions, as they defeated the Belmont Bulldogs 96-62 Thursday at Mount Douglas night to conclude the 4A boys Lower Island Championships.

Oak Bay defeated Mount Doug 85-42 in the semis while Belmont edged Claremont 68-62 in the other semifinal.

All four teams, plus Spectrum, qualify for the 4A senior boys Island championships in Cowichan Feb. 22 to 24.

Meanwhile the 3A Boys Lower Island championship final will feature the host Reynolds Roadrunners against Royal Bay, 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Reynolds.

In the 2A boys Lower Island semifinals, Brentwood beat Lambrick 90-37 and the Shawnigan Lake beat St. Michaels 74-44, setting up a Shawnigan vs. Brentwood 2A South Island final at Brentwood on Saturday night. The top five teams will advance to the Island 2A finals at SMUS next week, meaning PCS, Lmbrick, SMUS and Gulf Islands are still hoping to qualify.

Senior girls Island basketball championships continue this week for 2A at Mark Isfeld and next week, Feb. 23-24 at Glenlyon Norfolk.
