Hopefully, this Halloween will include lots of treats, a few tricks, and a safe night for everyone.

Nanaimo RCMP issued some public safety reminders this week ahead of Halloween on Thursday, Oct. 31, offering tips for trick-or-treaters and their parents, motorists, and anyone else who is planning to get into the Halloween spirit that day.

Fireworks are OK only in certain circumstances, and firecrackers, not at all.

“What’s the difference you ask? Well, the only way in which you can lawfully possess or even set off fireworks in the City of Nanaimo is to receive prior approval from the fire chief,” noted RCMP in the release. “Firecrackers are prohibited and no one is allowed to possess them or set them off.”

As always, police remind parents and guardians that masks aren’t recommended if children can’t see their feet properly while masked.

“Make sure little ones are also dressed appropriately and that their costumes are not only comfortable, but visible,” RCMP added.

Parents are also advised to look at their child’s candy haul at the end of the night and “do a once over before allowing your kids to dig in.”

Pets should be kept indoors on Halloween night to minimize their exposure to the noise and excitement of the evening.

And for motorists, it’s important to reduce speed significantly in the late afternoon, evening and night on Halloween, drive with care and attention, and be prepared to stop suddenly.

Anyone with questions about fireworks, firecrackers or Halloween safety is welcome to contact Nanaimo RCMP detachment’s Community Policing section at 250-734-5445.
