The Victoria Philharmonic Choir’s annual Christmas Carol Sing-along returns to St. Mary the Virgin Church on Tuesday, Dec. 21, allowing Oak Bay residents another year’s opportunity to release their songs in harmony.

There are two performances at the Elgin Road church, one at 5 p.m. for all ages and another at 7:30 p.m. for those 12 and older.

“Our singers will be masked, but there is no muffling the joy the 60-voice Victoria Philharmonic Choir and conductor Peter Butterfield are feeling as we prepare to raise our voices in song with our community once again,” the choir stated in a release. The concert has been an annual show since 2009, with the exception of 2020.

Performers include organist/pianist Marco Vitale, an early music specialist whose career has taken him around the world, currently to a position as music director at St. Barnabas Church in Victoria. On the program are traditional Christmas songs, along with an old French carol and pieces by John Rutter, Morten Lauridsen, and Benjamin Britten.

Tickets for both shows are $11.17 for students and $21.73 for adults (plus service fee), and free for children under 12. Proof of full vaccination is required and attendance is limited to 225 participants per show. Some windows may be left open to improve ventilation, so wearing layers is advised.
