A Victoria performer’s music got massive exposure on Monday night – Mike Edel’s song “Finish Line” was featured on American Idol– after a very topsy-turvy day for the artist.

Edel, who lived in Victoria for over seven years and now works out of Seattle, had recently played in Victoria for Fox Glove’s ‘Let the Love In’ show. After travelling home that night, he forgot his pedals in his car.

“My window got smashed and the pedals got taken,” Edel said. “When we got back to our car to clean it up, one of the producers from American Idol called and wanted to use ‘Finish Line’ on an episode after discovering it on Spotify.”

Edel said it was a very up-and-down day, “Like most days of being an artist, I feel like.”

Edel wrote the song about his wife’s graduation.

“[The line] ‘There’s a marathon in your mind, there’s no clock there’s just a finish line’ refers to each individual path in life,” he said. “The forces of society and time seem to want to tell us what the gold standard is for our life, but I think we work it out in our own ways. Time is sort of irrelevant.”

The song was produced by Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla, who also played the guitar in it, along with the performance of Edel and North Saanich’s Colin Stewart.
