Linden Singers will tackle a selection of languages during The Hour Has Come. The concert is May 28 at 7 p.m. in the First Metropolitan United Church in Victoria.

Linden Singers of Victoria will present a spring concert featuring music written by Jewish composers such as Felix Mendelssohn, Srul Irving Glick, Leonard Bernstein, Sid Robinovitch and others in The Hour Has Come. The program will include Psalms and liturgical settings of prayers, Yiddish folk songs, as well as music from Broadway.

“We are presenting a truly rich musical buffet,” said Dr. Garry Froese, music director of the Linden Singers. “There will be something for most musical tastes.”

The subjects will be diverse, ranging from the wisdom of the psalms, to the consolation of Jewish liturgical music, contemporary humanism, a 20th century telling of the classic story of Romeo and Juliet, and the satire of Voltaire. All of this will be contrasted with the humour found in the infectious enthusiasm of some Yiddish folksongs. The audience will encounter texts presented in the English, German, Hebrew and Yiddish languages.

The musical diet will include the lush harmonies and highly accessible melodies of Mendelssohn, the rhythmic and refreshingly pungent harmonic language of Bernstein, the comfort and peace found in the sensitive settings of Jewish worship texts by Robinovitch, the modal surprises of a well crafted Yiddish folksong and the broad symphonic structures found in the music of Glick.

The Hour Has Come is May 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Metropolitan United Church, Balmoral at Quadra Street. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for senior/student. Tickets are available at the door or online at www.lindensingers.ca.
