Coffee’s on for mornings at the Met in Sidney.

The Emmy Award winning The Met: Live in HD continues for a sixth season with live transmissions that will beam into Star Cinema in Sidney.

“We’ve got a whole lot of people excited about it,” said Sandy Oliver, who co-owns the theatre with sister Carolyn Lewis. “There are lots of opera fans here.”

A major investment of a new digital projector opened the door to selection at the Sidney theatre. Prom, plays or other programs are all options with the new equipment and Star Cinema’s open to suggestions.

“It’s about trying to get the community thinking about what they would like to see,” Oliver said.

They’ve brought the excitement of Stanley Cup finals, and romance of Royal Weddings to the screen using the new projector. Starting Saturday, they’ll bring intimate opera.

“When you’re an audience member at the opera, you don’t get to zoom in on that facial expression,” Oliver said. At Star Cinema, those expressions will be front and centre, and served with hot coffee.

The series starts with a special free presentation of the much-loved classic The Barber of Seville on Sept. 24 (doors open at 9:15 a.m.) The show is free, but donations to the Sidney Lions Food Bank will be gratefully accepted.
