North Saanich potters on display in Fairfield

North Saanich potters Mavis Mooney and Louise Parsons are among 39 ceramic artists who will display their talents and their work on Saturday, June 18 at the Fairfield Gonzales Community Place, next to the Moss Street Market in Fairfield.

Mooney and Parsons have both been making pots since the 1970s. Mooney, a long-term resident of North Saanich  recently relocated from Lands End Road to her place near the airport and Parsons recently returned to the to coast after many years in Calgary.

The location will be a first for Clay Connects, the annual show and sale sponsored by the South Vancouver Island Potters’ Guild. In previous years, the guild, composed of some 70 members from the south Island, held its annual event at St. Michael’s Anglican Church.

“We’re really excited to be moving close to the Moss Street Market, so we can share in the enthusiasm that event always engenders,” said SVIPG president Roger Champagne.

“It’s very much worth the trip from North Saanich to Fairfield,” agreed Parsons.

Some of the 39 who will be in Fairfield on June 18, from 10 a.m. to 3.30 p.m have four decades of potting experience; others are relatively new converts to clay. Their pots run the gamut from practical to whimsical. Prices range from a few dollars to more than $100.

The exhibitors work in a variety of styles and materials. Some produce functional tableware; others venture into multi-media, adding such things as glass, beads and fabric to clay pieces including masks and statues.
