Several dozen gathered July 21 to witness the unveiling of the WSANEC welcome figure, now standing over the Sidney Waterfront at Beacon Park.

Artist Perry LaFortune spoke before the unveiling ceremony, among others including Tsawout Chief Harvey Underwood, Tsartlip Chief Don Tom, Perry LaFortune’s brother Tom, MP Elizabeth May, Mayor Steve Price and MLA Adam Olsen.

Each addressed what Canada 150 has meant for Indigenous communities that have suffered during Canada’s colonization. The commissioning of the WSANEC welcome figure is one way the Town of Sidney has acted inclusively.
