Students at Dunsmuir Middle School participated in a month-long campaign that helped donate more than 5,000 socks to Our Place Society.

Students in Grade 8 teacher Sue Duvall’s classroom sounded upbeat on Wednesday as they piled packs of socks on two tables. Trash bags with more socks laid stuffed on the floor at the room’s front.

Grade 6 student Christian Blanchard, 11, and Grade 8 student Daniel Cehovskis, 13, donated approximately 1,000 and 800 pairs of socks respectively thanks to the generosity of their families and friends, and the smart thinking of their moms, who helped get the word out on Facebook.

Blanchard said he was feeling “really good” knowing that his family was able to give money, including his dad and his grandparents. Cehovskis added, “I wanted to try and donate a lot.”

Duvall said she wanted to do the campaign because she knew what the students were capable of and wanted them to know they can make a difference. The students got behind the idea and made some posters to hang around the school.

Grant Mackenzie, Our Place direct of communications, said they were thrilled to hear about the sock drive.

“We know that Our Place is a hub for so many people in need and giving to us is a great way to get items into the hands of people who really need them,” he said.
