It’s the season of giving and to show their appreciation for all the community does to keep the reels rolling at Star Cinema, the Sidney movie theatre is turning their their 20th anniversary celebration into a fundraiser.

Owner Sandy Oliver wanted to bring a film in house that would play to her loyal audience and in doing so, decided to give all ticket revenue to the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank.

“I often say I share that ownership with the community,” Oliver says. “They’ve raised so much money for us.”

Tea with the Dames will play Friday, Dec. 7 at 2:30 p.m. prefaced by a gathering at the cinema starting at 1 p.m. with tea and cookies.

“Just a way to show our appreciation,” Oliver says.

The event – one of the last before Star re-opens in a temporary location in January – is sold out but Tea with the Dames will run until Dec. 13.

Donation jars will also be available if anyone feels inclined to give a little extra at this time of year when Oliver points out, “we’re all in the mood to give.”

“The truth is, the food bank needs support all year-round and this is an easier time for people to generate that support,” she adds.

As the cinema prepares to open in a new location – the site of a former furniture store at 9824 Fifth St. – in the new year, Oliver says the transition will be as seamless as possible planning to close for one week at most. “

“In January we’ll be up and running right until the new theatre is ready for us to move over too,” says Oliver, pointing out the new year is prime for movie-goers as Oscar season creates good buzz to get out and see films.
