New banners are going to brighten Sidney’s Beacon Avenue this spring and summer.

On Monday, Sidney Mayor Steve Price and Town Crier Kenny Podmore revealed the new banner designs, which will be hung from light poles along the community’s main street in celebration of Canada’s 150 years and Sidney’s 50th anniversary as a town.

“We probably have some of the nicest banners in all of Canada,”Price said Monday. “Compared to the ones in Vancouver right now, apparently ours are better.”

Price said the banners are part of the lead up to Sidney’s Canada 150 celebrations.

“We’re going to have a party that Sidney’s never seen before,” he said. “It’ll be a wonderful celebration.”

Podmore, who is one of the main organizers of the local Canada 150 events, added the banners differ from past ones in that they are more personal, depicting two local RCMP officers (Erin Fraser and Paul Mittelsteadt) in their Red Serge, and sailboats on the Salish Sea off Sidney. The photos used for the banners were taken by local photographer Nat Klein.
