Sidney welcomes friends from afar

Town of Sidney to welcome visitors from Japan Sept. 28

SIDNEY — The Town of Sidney will welcome visitors from Japan from Sept. 28 to Oct. 3.

The Sidney Sister Cities Association (SSCA) says 10 students are coming from the town of Niimi in Okayama, Japan — one of the SSCA’s sister cities.

The group will be here for an educational and cultural exchange.

The eight girls and two boys, with their chaperones, including Deputy Mayor Hitoshi Shibata,  will get to know the people of their host city.

The students will visit Parkland Secondary School for English language instruction. They will visit the 2012 First Nations and Metis art show; go whale watching, entertain SSCA members with their cultural dances and songs, and more.

“We’re so looking forward to welcoming these young people,” said president of the SSCA, Bob McLure. “Travel, of course, is an invaluable educational tool, and new friendships are a real bonus. If you see our visitors in town, we hope you’ll give them a welcoming Sidney smile!”
