Last year’s pilot program, designed to get families outside and into local parks, was such a success that it’s back this summer.

Play in the Park, run by Panorama Recreation and the Capital Regional District, officially launched its second season on July 3 at Central Saanich’s Rodolph Park.

A small and normally quiet park, it was chosen for the opening night events because of the tremendous turnout during last year’s Play in the Park, says Claire Erdem, Panorama’s Community Recreation Coordinator.

“Rodolph Park averaged around 200 people each night of Play in the Park last year,” she said, noting that the other parks in the program had an average of 60.

Those numbers all around are great, she said, noting the focus of the program is family play, general fitness and activity.

Play in the Park takes place from now until August 29.

Between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. each night of the week (excluding weekends), seven Saanich Peninsula parks host a big, inflatable obstacle course and Panorama staff host games and fun for the whole family.

Erdem added there has been one change in the locations this year — North Saanich Middle School has been replaced by the Greenglade Centre, as it is open during the evening.

Play in the Park is free to enjoy.
