The new nature-based childcare centre coming to Central Saanich will be called SESISEJ.

Pronounced SHAW-she-such, it means little forest in SENCOTEN.

A partnership between the Saanich School District and Beacon Community Services, the centre will create 84 childcare spaces, including full-time infant toddler care, full-time and part-time group care (ages three to five) and after-school childcare.

Located at 7420 Veyaness Rd., the program is based on the WSANEC ways of knowing and being, and is aimed at helping children establish a sense of community, place and belonging to help them transition into future education, according to the district.

Approved by the SD63 board at its April 19 meeting, the name was recommended by a committee comprised of district representatives, partner groups and the WSANEC school board.
