SIDNEY — The Peninsula News Review and Editor Steven Heywood were recognized by the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion for highlighting local veterans and Legion activities over the years.

The PNR was presented with a Royal Canadian Legion Media Award at the regular monthly meeting of Branch 37 (Saanich Peninsula).

“Upon his arrival and following his appointment as the Editor of the Peninsula News Review,” stated a citation certificate, “(Heywood) has demonstrated his keen interest in and with our Branch and our activities. As co-chair of the local Hearts Awards program, a community volunteer event, he has contributed much towards acknowledging these unique and so essential members of the Peninsula.”

“Perhaps the best example of his sincere interest in our organization has been his call and request to local veterans … to tell and share their experiences relating to and in promoting Remembrance Day ceremonies and celebrations.”

Other Legion News:

• Branch 37 Vice-President Bob Jones says the search for a new location for the local Legion is ongoing. He said the process is “alive and well” but any solution will not come to pass for some time yet. The local Branch has been searching from a new home, as they do not own the building they are in, and have faced challenges in the past, such as flooding.

• Area veterans will be recognized for their service to the Legion and to the community at the Branch’s next monthly meeting on June 24.

• The Branch noted its in-principle support and promotion of one of its members — Tyson King — who has been instrumental in starting up a new group, the Vancouver Island Canine Medical Bootcamp Association. The organization plans to train dogs to help veterans suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

• The Branch will look into have a presence at this summer’s Sidney Street Market, to help with looking for new members.

• The local Legion’s Poppy Fund balance sits at around $27,000 and organizers of this year’s drive will soon be looking for volunteers. They need some 60 to 70 people, willing to collect donations for the Poppy Fund.

• President Mary Truttman will attend the Ceremonial Reviews of the local air and naval cadets on June 10. The Legion’s Cadet Medal will also be presented next month.
