Second Lieut. Shannon Martin is officially an officer in the Canadian Forces (CF) after Lt.-Col. Richard Mudryk, Commanding Officer of Albert Head Air Cadet Summer Training Centre presented her with her commissioning scroll.

Martin, 21, is a Reserve member in the Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC) branch of the Canadian Forces. She is employed at the training centre this summer as a Flight Commander for the General Training Course, leading junior air cadets as they learn about good citizenship, sports, field survival, drill, range, and familiarization flying. Martin was an air cadet at 89 Squadron in Victoria for six years and has spent the past two-and-a-half as a member of the CIC. While she lives in Victoria, Martin works throughout the year with the local air cadets, 676 Kittyhawk squadron.

The cadet program is designed to contribute to the development and preparation of youth for the transition to adulthood. CIC Officers are responsible for cadet training, supervision and administration. The vast majority serve the CF on a part-time basis while continuing full-time studies or pursuing a civilian career. The CIC celebrated 100 years of service to Canada in 2009.
