Greater Victoria residents recycle more than 1,000 trees for children’s charity

Donations amass to $15,000 for Easter Seals BC and Yukon

Residents chipped in more than $15,000 for Easter Seals with tree recycling over the holiday season. The charity takes two days each January to collect trees by donation at various sites across Greater Victoria.

For more than 75 years, Easter Seals in B.C. has helped children and adults address life’s challenges by providing experiences and tools to build their self-esteem, self-confidence and sense of independence. The 32nd annual Chip In for the Kids, raised more than $15,000 for Easter Seals programs and services, including Camp Shawnigan where children and adults with disabilities have enjoyed overnight camp experiences since 1979.

A total of 146 Christmas trees were picked up from south Vancouver Island homes and more than 900 were dropped off at seven sites in Esquimalt, Saanich, Victoria and on the West Shore.

Service groups including the Esquimalt Lions Club, Saanich Lions Club, Victoria Lions Club, Victoria Chinatown Lions Club, Victoria Chinatown Lioness Lions Club and West Shore Lions Club were at locations to assist with disposing of the trees in an environmentally friendly way.

Chip In for the Kids has raised over $435,000 in its 32 years.
