Central Saanich looks to change the landscape of Chatterton Park while celebrating Tree Appreciation Day.
The district invites residents to plant 50 native trees on Saturday (Sept. 28) for the grassy area between Wallace Drive and Woodward Drive.
“Local residents will get the chance to plant Garry oak, arbutus, shore pine, Douglas fir, and more,” Mayor Ryan Windsor said in a news release. “Trees improve our health and well-being, help restore native ecosystems, and provide much-needed cooling effects as our summers become hotter and drier.”
Alongside tree planting, invasive plant removal and refreshments, parks staff will host a tree-planting demonstration. Residents can also take away Garry oak seedlings, which are fire-resistant as mature trees and safe to plant on their own properties.
Residents are encouraged to dress for the weather, wear long pants and rubber boots, and bring their own gloves, shovels, and clippers. The district will have some tools available for use, too.
Tree Appreciation Day is Sept. 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. at 6716 Woodward Dr. in Brentwood Bay.
