Oak Bay, Esquimalt & Victoria Fire Fighters: $11,000 (Bright Nights in Stanley Park, Facebook)

Firefighters across the region swing into the giving season

Local firefighter says it’s about whole community

Holiday-giving is spreading through local fire departments.

Alongside their associates from Victoria and Esquimalt, the Oak Bay Fire Department jointly donated $11,000 to the BC Burn Fund Nov. 28. Firefighters in Saanich donated $5,000 as well.

Next, Oak Bay FD were seen hauling Christmas trees into cars, giving their early support to CFAX Santas Anonymous.

At least one Oak Bay firefighter will be volunteering on the phones during this year’s Miracle on Broad Street radio-thon Dec. 14, alongside other firefighters from Victoria’s core departments.

“The whole point is you’re not just a public servant,” said Jason Hodge, executive director of the Oak Bay Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation. “It’s about trying to look out for the overall community. It’s hard to explain, but it’s just about giving back.”
