Hazardous materials can be disposed at the Hartland Landfill, according to a reminder from the Township of Esquimalt.

The Township website states: “Hazardous waste means gaseous, liquid and solid waste which, because of its inherent nature and quantity, requires special disposal techniques to avoid creating health hazards, nuisances or environmental pollution.”

Hazardous wastes, as defined by garbage and waste bylaw 2630, include:

  • toxins
  • poisons
  • corrosives
  • irritants
  • strong sensitizers
  • flammables (excluding plastics, paper, and paper products)
  • explosives
  • infectious wastes
  • condemned foods
  • asbestos
  • sharps (hypodermic needles, etc.)
  • animal excrement
  • soiled diapers
  • used personal hygiene products

Household hazardous wastes can be disposed of by residents of the Capital Regional District at the Landfill. This excludes industrial waste from commercial businesses.
