Diabetes fundraising run at Beaver Lake Sunday

Cash Store Financial is hosting a run at Beaver Lake park on Sunday to raise money for the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Cash Store Financial is hosting a five and three kilometre walk/runs at Beaver Lake park on Sunday to raise money for the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the fundraising "Freedom Run" kicks off at 10 a.m. near Beaver Lake. Proceeds will help the 9 million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes.

Canadian Diabetes Association says the funds raised will be used to support Canadian scientists and clinicians in their quest for innovative developments in the prevention, treatment and management of diabetes. Although the research is diverse in its scope, the key aspects remain the same – to improve the quality of life of people living with diabetes and to find a cure.

Diabetes has touched the family of Susan Bennett, manager of the Douglas Street Instaloans branch, who is entering year four of being involved in the Freedom Run.

"My father lost his leg to diabetes and later his life," Bennett said. "My brother and niece also have diabetes, so I am very passionate about this cause and do what I can to help find a cure for this awful disease."

The 5K and 3K run/walks are Oct. 4, starting at 10 a.m. at Beaver Lake.  See www.thefreedomrun.ca for more information and to register.
