Balancing adventure with leisure in Victoria can help alleviate summer FOMO

These rejuvenating summer activities around Saanich can provide relaxation

Summer fear of missing out, known as FOMO, can come in a barrage of anxiety.

Will I miss out on festivals or vacation time because of jobs or obligations? Will I envy others' Instagram summer highlight reels? Does a limitation in my life prevent me from doing activities others around me are doing? Will the summer slip by and I'll realize I didn't get the tan I wanted?

FOMO is a known occurrence in the age of social media where the best parts of people's lives are flaunted.

But after the barrage of global and local stresses over the past few years, maybe we shouldn't put so much pressure on ourselves. While there might be that added incentive to "go live our lives" now that we are well away from lockdowns, it's not always so clear-cut for everyone. And perhaps the summer doesn't have to be all about adventure – maybe it's worth it to find rejuvenating and relaxing activities.

Below are examples that can help you de-stress, whether that's from work, obligations or, from your summer FOMO.

Take a stroll around Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary

Nothing says rejuvenating than a stroll in nature. Located in Saanich, this sanctuary includes Swan Lake, marshy lowlands, the Nature House and Christmas Hill. The lake loop trail is 2.5 km, and an easy, accessible hike, meandering over boardwalks, along the marshes and through the surrounding oak forest. With dogs forbidden, there is lots of wildlife out in the open here, including 228 bird species. Visit swanlake.com to learn more.

Try a paddleboarding experience

There's something about being on the water that's instantly grounding. Paddleboarding is a relaxing, lower-effort way to get the experience and thanks to paddle boarding groups, it doesn't have to be a self-guided or solo activity. Companies such as Mer Tales in partnership with South Island Sup have curated memorable paddleboarding experiences such as Paddle & Snorkel, a Paddle Full Moon Ceremony, and a Marine Ecological Tour. Their offerings are led by a knowledgeable marine biologist at picturesque locations such as Gonzales Beach or Brentwood Bay.

Visit the Peninsula Country Market

A lively atmosphere awaits at Peninsula Country Market with colourful produce, handmade crafts, live music and food from more than 50 vendors. Find this market on Saturdays (til Oct. 12) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Saanich Fairground.

Make a beach outing

Elk/Beaver Lake is a popular spot for swimming, kayaking, fishing, and paddleboarding. The park features a sandy beach, picnic areas, and a fishing float (all accessible for people with disabilities). Plus there's a network of trails for hiking and biking. For a classic beach day, head to Cordova Bay Beach. The long stretch of sandy shoreline is perfect for sunbathing, building sandcastles, and beach combing. Why not also pack up a set of cards, board games, some snacks, and a blanket for the day?
