Parkland athletes moving on to BC High School Track and Field Championships

Five Panthers qualified at the Vancouver Island Track and Field Championship on May 17 and 18 and will move on to the provincial event in Langley in June.

The Parkland Panthers came away from the Vancouver Island High School Track and Field Championships with a sense of pride and victory.

The small, but strong, Parkland Secondary School senior track and field team came in third place with 68.6 points, taking home the bronze medal.

Here are few highlights from the event: Ben Sammons finished first in Senior Boys hurdles, second in 400-metre hurdles and third in the 400 metre; Sayril Salaya finished first in Senior Boys 200 metre, second in long jump and third in the 100 metre; Emma Dennis finished second in Senior Girls javelin with a throw over 36 metres and sixth in shot put and discus; Cooper Langard finished third in Junior Boys 1500 metre and fourth in the 800 metre; and Leona Yan finished fourth in Senior long jump and sixth in Senior Girls triple jump.

These five student athletes have qualified for the BC High School Track and Field Championship coming up on June 1 to 3 in Langley.

Over 37 high schools competed in the track and field championship held at the University of Victoria on May 17 and 18.
