Nanaimo RCMP believe it has found body of missing teenager Chang

The Nanaimo RCMP have recovered a body believed to be that of Makayla Chang.

Nanaimo RCMP believe it has found the body of Makayla Chang.

Chang, 16, was reported missing on March 22 and according to a press release, her body was found in Nanaimo.

“Nanaimo RCMP are treating this as a homicide investigation,” said Cpl. Tammy Douglas, RCMP Island District spokeswoman. “The Nanaimo RCMP do not believe the public is at risk and remain committed to advising them should the risk level change. The investigation is being led by Nanaimo Serious Crime Unit along with the assistance of other police resources. This remains a priority investigation with dedicated resources tasked with determining the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and murder of Chang.”

As the investigation is ongoing, Nanaimo RCMP won’t provide any further information, Douglas said.

Chang has been the subject of an extensive police search and the focus of a community vigil to show support for the missing teen and her family.

Douglas said in a brief phone interview she had no further information about where or when Chang’s body was found.

“I don’t have any of those details,” Douglas said. “This is literally all the information that I have to release at this time, but I’m sure that we’ll do an update when there’s more information to release, but this is it for now.”

This story will be updated as information becomes available.
