As 2023 draws to a close, the Saanich Peninsula Health & Hospital Foundation team has their focus firmly on the future of healthcare for the community.
This fall, the Foundation embarked on a two-year campaign to renovate and update the hospital’s Acute Care Unit.
Opened in 1978, the Acute Care Unit today hosts about 90 per cent of the hospital’s admitted patients, including a mix of surgical, palliative and other acute care patients.
As science and medicine have evolved, so too has healthcare as a whole, leading to improved outcomes and a better experience for patients, and a more efficient, enjoyable work environment for medical teams, explains Foundation Executive Director Sarah Bragg.
“As the hospital is turning 50 in 2024, the spaces in the Acute Care Unit have become outdated and require updating to meet today’s standards, whether that’s space for bedside medical equipment or improved infection control, including more room between patients and more hand-washing stations,” Bragg explains.
A reconfigured layout will offer more privacy for patients and their families, and the centralized work space for medical teams will accommodate today’s digital record-keeping.
“All of this will mean a more comfortable space for patients and a better work environment for care teams,” Bragg says.
“The most impressive thing about this hospital is the people who work in it. The care teams and people working in every department are providing excellence in care. We want the space in the ACU to match the care that’s given by the teams who work there.”
A modern, inviting work environment is also key to attracting staff at all levels, Bragg adds.
“I think this is part of attracting people to work on the Peninsula where excellence in technology and excellence in care go hand-in-hand.”
