SAANICH PENINSULA — Local leaders are being invited to a tour of two area bird sanctuaries — the Victoria Migratory Bird Sanctuary and Esquimalt Lagoon — on Sunday, Feb. 19.

The Friends of SHOAL Harbour — an advocacy and education group with a focus on the SHOAL Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary around the Saanich Peninsula — is leading the tour.

“This guided tour has been organized to promote awareness and enjoyment of two of the many interesting and beautiful natural features of the Greater Victoria area,” stated FOSH Director Farrell Boyce in a media release.

The Victoria Migratory Bird Sanctuary was established in 1923, eight years before the establishment of the Shoal Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary in 1931 at the north end of the Saanich Peninsula. Both sanctuaries were established to protect migratory birds from excessive hunting.

Invitations are being extended to community leaders to join the tour and Boyce added they anticipate that there will be spaces available for the public. To find out more, email  rick.searle@ekoscommunications.com or call 250-655-3600. More information is available at shoalharbour.com.

The vessel MV 4 Ever Wild has been made available by Eagle Wing Tours. The tour is jointly sponsored by Nature Canada.

The tour runs from 9 a.m. to noon.
