Some of the most beautiful dogs will be gathering in Central Saanich later this month.

The 84th annual Vancouver Island Dog Fancier’s Association dog show is May 26 at 9:30 a.m. at the Saanich Fairgrounds, 1528 Stelly’s Cross Rd.

The event continues May 27 and 28 starting at 9 a.m. each day.

Dogs will be judged in beauty and in movement.

This year there will be more than 80 different breeds, says one of the event organizers Joanne Helm.

“People looking to select a dog - this is a good place for people to look at breeds and get information,” says Helm, who has been breeding Airedale Terriers for years.

“The purpose of the dog has a lot to do with how they behave, it’s based on the breed purpose.”

Helm adds she would never sell to a single person living in an apartment building because that does not go well with the dog’s temperament.

At the family-friendly dog show there will be shopping opportunities – and not just for Fido – along with food concessions and raffle prizes.

On Saturday there will also be a charity pet-food drive. People are encouraged to bring donations for the pet foodbank at Our Place. Anything from toys, to treats, to food (even opened food) will be accepted. All donations go towards lower income families living with pets.

Admission to the dog show is free. People are asked to leave their pets at home.
