The Sidney Fine Art Show Committee is calling all artists for entries for the annual fine art show.

Although the Sidney Fine Art Show doesn’t take place until October, now is the time for artists to submit their work. Jurors are looking for art based on excellence, creativity, originality and technical achievement, with an emphasis on artistic accomplishment.

John Thorp, a member of the Committee, says anyone is welcome to submit a piece, but because the jury must actually see the piece come September it sort of limits entries to people from the islands and the lower mainland. All artwork submitted must be original work of the artist, not previously shown on Vancouver Island south of Duncan, B.C. and have been completed within the past two years.

Typically around 400 pieces are selected to be in the show out of around 1,000 entries.

This year the jurors are: Harold Allanson, a signature member of several national and international watercolour organizations; Michelle Jacques, chief curator at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria; and Mike Svob, an impressionist style painter with over 30-years experience in watercolour, acrylic and oil work.

Cheques are written for close to $100,000 to the artists for art sold during the show; money that goes directly back to supporting the island artistic community.

Over the years, the show has grown to the point where around 6,000 people come and admire the variety and quality of the art displayed in the gallery.

“The 2017 show marks the 15th anniversary of the show in what is a year of anniversaries – Sidney’s 50th and Canada’s 150th,” says Thorp. “The show brings lots of business to Sidney.”

The deadline for submissions is Friday, July 14 at 3 p.m.
