Curtains rise at Parkland secondary
Parkland Secondary’s Musical Theatre program is excited about their opening night of Curtains, the smash Broadway musical, which opens Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m., and runs nightly through to Saturday Feb. 5.
“This is definitely the most complex musical we’ve produced at Parkland, and it has turned out to be one of our favourites,” said teacher Joan Saunders. “It has everything in it that you could possibly hope for in a musical — great songs and great characters, including the overbearing stage mother, the ingénue, the detective, the flamboyant director and the sleazy businessman. And it’s hilarious.”
Billed as a musical/comedy/whodunit and written by Kander and Ebb (Cabaret and Chicago), the production focuses on a murder which happens on the opening night of a new musical titled Robbin’ Hood. Boston detective Frank Cioffi is called in to investigate the murder.
“He’s a detective who lives for the theatre, and investigating this murder is one way he can spend some time in the place he loves and with the people he admires,” said Grade 10 student Michael Bell who plays Cioffi.
One of the people he most admires is ingénue Niki Harris, played by Josiane Vlitos.
“It’s been so much fun doing a newer musical, as not everyone has seen it, and we can bring our own perspective to the show and characters,” Vlitos said.
Parkland’s music students, led by teacher Norbert Ziegler, and the Stagecraft class, taught by Ron Vague complete the production.
“There’s so much that has to come together in the last few weeks,” said Grade 11 Stagecraft student Rowan Smith. “It takes all of us, both on and off stage, to make this really work.”
Reserved seats for Curtains are $10; available at the Parkland school office during regular hours, or by calling 250-655-2736. The show runs nightly at the Parkland Theatre Feb. 2 to 5 at 7:30 p.m.
