It’s time to show off Sidney’s charm once again.

The Sidney Sister Cities Association is accepting photo submissions for the 2018 Town of Sidney calendars and postcards. The deadline for submissions is noon, April 28.

The postcards are a new addition. There will be eight available. Of those, seven will have a unique, standalone photo and one will feature four photos.

“Once you’ve lived here for a while you notice the charm,” says Bob McLure, chair of the calendar committee and member of the association. “It’s much quieter than Victoria, but yet, there’s so much activity always going on. (Sidney’s) a great town to get to know and share with others.”

For the past seven years the Sidney Sister Cities Association has been printing and selling calendars – wall and desk – composed entirely of community member photo submissions. Each year there are about 350 submissions and of those, 50 photos are selected for the project. The main requirement of the photos: they must highlight the unique charm of Sidney.

McLure says the Sidney markets and waterfront are ideal places for charming photo ops.

The calendar sales support the various activities of the association, such as student exchanges between Sidney and its three sister cities of Anacortes, Washington State; Cairns, Australia; and Niimi, Japan. Calendars and postcards are also shared with the sister cities.

“That’s the thing about photos, they’re no good until you share them with someone,” McLure says. “It’s all really about fostering friendships, getting to know communities and learning about other places.”

Photographs must be submitted in hard copy as a 4×6 glossy, borderless photo either in person or mailed to Bob McLure at #9-2235 Harbour Road, Sidney, B.C., V8L 2P7. Anyone is eligible to submit and as many times desired.

The calendars and postcards go on sale the beginning of July for around $12. They are primarily sold at Tanner’s Books. For more information email mclure@shaw.ca.
