Parkland Secondary School Judo instructor Mickey Fitzgerald was awarded the 2013 Steve Sasaki Award by Judo B.C. recently.

The award is given out annually by Judo B.C. to a long time member of the association who exemplifies the principals of Kodokan Judo and has a lifelong dedication to promoting the sport of Judo in B.C.

Fitzgerald has been involved in Victoria’s Judo scene since 1976 when he moved from Terrace where he previously trained. In 1980 Fitzgerald moved to Japan and spent six years living and training there.

Since then he has been heavily involved with promoting the sport within the community and at the school level and is currently a chief instructor with the Victoria Judo Club as well as a member of the provincial grading board.

“It was very humbling to receive the award,” Fitzgerald said. “I was definitely shocked and surprised.”
