“It’s like walking back in time,” is how Colleen Hay of Sidney Bakery describes the Parkland Secondary School alumni community.
“A lot of the ladies I’ve known since I was a teenager, and now I’m 60,” Hay said.
Hay and her business will be serving doughnuts at the Parkland Secondary School’s 50th-year celebration. To amp up the community, the alumni are now looking for other Parkland alumni businesses to promote and get in on the fun leading up to and during the May 3 celebration.
The intent is to bring awareness to Parkland alumni’s impact in the community, said Stasia Hartley, one of the alumni committee members.
Parkland alumni plan to list the names of alumni businesses, alumni names and class years on their welcome package brochure and to encourage attendees to patronize their fellow alumni’s businesses.
This is a free offer to show off the Parkland alumni community, the organization said.
Hay said she remembers not wanting to go to her high school reunions when she was younger but she said as she got older, it’s become fun.
“You look forward to seeing all the faces, like they come in the bakery and shop; usually we’re one of the first places that people come. So you get to see people that you haven’t seen in years. And it’s just fun.”
