Last call for Hearts of the Community nominations
Time is running out to nominate local volunteers for the 15th annual Hearts of the Community Volunteer Awards: nominations close Jan. 30.
“It’d be wonderful to see our in-basket stuffed full when nominations close next week,” says Penny Thomsen, board chair of Beacon Community Services, which jointly sponsors the awards with the Peninsula News Review.
She points out that volunteerism shapes nearly all aspects of Peninsula life.
“Volunteers keep neighbourhoods safe, protect our environment, ease the load for needy families, comfort the sick and elderly, teach kids to read or throw a ball – the list is endless," she said. "They selflessly pour their hearts into making the Peninsula a great place to live. And nominating them for a Hearts award is a great way to say thank you.”
All nominees will be honoured at a Feb. 21 awards ceremony, which is free and open to members of the public; the event includes live entertainment by Stelly’s secondary students, award presentations, and a free luncheon.
Award categories include: Service to Seniors; Service to Children and Families; Outstanding Youth Volunteer; Overall Service to the Community; Lifetime Service; and Community Service or Project by a Group. The Outstanding Youth Volunteer will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
Nominations forms are available online at www.beaconcs.ca or from the News Review (6-9843 Second St), Beacon’s SHOAL Activity Centre (10030 Resthaven) Beacon’s 9860 Third St. office, or at Beacon’s Sidney and Brentwood Bay thrift shops.
