Mayfair Shopping Centre’s general manager apologized to Black Friday shoppers who sat in their cars for long periods of time Friday, stuck trying to leave the mall’s rooftop parking.

In light of major renovations at Mayfair, most customers were apparently unaware that the rooftop parking lot now has a second exit. Shoppers can depart from the roof down to Finlayson Street

“We really are pleased that people choose to come here, and we do apologize to those who were inconvenienced by rooftop congestion today,” said general manager Laura Poland.

Mayfair shoppers remained civil on Black Friday, even with the parking snafu. With a day off for SD61 students, it forced a lot of parents to take the day off, which is believed to have led to additional congestion at Mayfair.

“What people were doing is heading out the old Tolmie Street exit and weren’t aware we have a second exit from the rooftop,” Poland said. “There are extra spaces on the roof, but a lot of people aren’t yet aware you can exit on Finlayson street.”

Tolmie Street has also become a lot busier than it used to be, Poland noted. Today, in particular, drivers weren’t paying attention and were often blocking the intersection, so people couldn’t leave the mall.

“We do apologize for those who were up there longer than they should have been, we just need to let people know they can go down Finlayson.”
